Cameron Dye and Lauren Goss Win St. Anthony's Triathlon

With high-level winds reported, modifications had to be made to the swim course to accommodate for safety with the choppy waters.  The swim course was modified to a 900m distance (typically 1.5k), with a required 900m run to the bike transition area due to the course changes. As a USAT Regional Championship site, registered USAT athletes qualified for the 2017 Olympic-Distance National Championships in Omaha, Nebraska, on August 12, from the 2017 St. Anthony’s Triathlon.

For the women, Lauren Goss (Boulder, CO) crossed the tape with a winning time of 1:51.54. To round out the podium, Lindsey Jerdonek (Sagamore Hills, CO) finished in second place, and Jennifer Spieldenner (Findlay, OH) finished in third.  Lauren Goss delayed her racing season to train more to pursue her goal of winning this year’s race.  “I wanted to win St. Anthony’s,” said Goss after competing in the event for the fifth time. While Goss was disappointed about the shorter swim distance due to the weather conditions, she still led from the gun and maintained her lead to the finish.

In the men’s field, Cameron Dye (Boulder, CO) took the top podium spot in 1:40:31, and was followed by Eric Lagerstrom (Gresham, OR) in second, and Jason West (Boulder, CO) in third. Like Goss, Dye also was hoping for a longer swim to flex his swimming prowess. For Dye, this is his fourth victory at St. Anthony’s after winning previously in 2010, 2015, and 2016, “It’s always harder to win when you should,” said Dye post-race.  “St. Anthony’s has done a great job sporting professionals in the sport,” said Dye.

In the Sprint Triathlon (Swim 750m, bike 20K, run 5K), the top three women were Celia Dubey, Michele Lopez, and Janice Haramis, and the top three male finishers were Jeffrey Zickus, Bernardo Perez, and Anthony Aseere.

In total, over 3200 athletes competed in the weekend’s St. Petersburg events from the Olympic Distance Triathlon, to the Sprint Triathlon, to the Kids’ Meek & Mighty event. “This year’s St. Anthony’s Triathlon events were more successful than ever before,” said Susan Daniels, race director for St. Anthony’s Triathlon. “We recorded record numbers of athlete participants, hosted a USAT National Qualifier, and had the pleasure of having some of the world’s best triathletes compete on our St. Petersburg course.”

Next year’s St. Anthony’s Triathlon will take place in April 2018.  Registration for the 2018 event will open in October.
