Upper Endoscopy

An upper endoscopy is usually an outpatient procedure. Your doctor examines your digestive tract using an endoscope, which is a thin, flexible, lighted tube with a camera attached to the end. Endoscopy provides your doctor with an accurate, detailed picture of your digestive tract, which provides the ability to detect abnormal growths, tissue or cancer.

Upper Endoscopy: What to Expect

Before an upper endoscopy, your doctor will tell you how to prepare. Usually, preparations include:

• Not eating or drinking for at least six hours before the procedure
• Discussing with your doctor any medications you take
• Arranging for a friend or family member to drive you home after the procedure (typically sedation is required for procedure)
