Endocrinology

The endocrine system is a complex network of glands that produce hormones, controlling everything from metabolism to sleep to digestion. When a disorder affects any component of the endocrine system, the entire body can be affected due to hormone imbalances.

Endocrine disorders can have a variety of causes but are usually triggered due to overproduction or underproduction of a hormone, a tumor that has developed in one of the glands of the endocrine system, or a genetic disorder. Diabetes is one of the most common endocrine disorders, which occurs when the pancreas (not part of the endocrine system) stops producing insulin; the elevated blood glucose levels then cause glandular problems and hormone imbalances that can lead to weight loss, fatigue, hunger, and excessive thirst.

In addition to diabetes, our endocrinologists can address:

  • Adrenal insufficiency
  • Cholesterol disorders
