The three hours consist of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and possibly Speech-Language Pathology, as the patient needs. In addition, as needed, Therapeutic Recreation, and/or Neuropsychology and group treatments are also provided. Therapy may start as early as 7am and is usually finished by 4pm, allowing evening hours for leisure activities, visiting with loved ones, and rest. Our patients may need assistance with recovery and/or learning new ways of accomplishing self care, mobility, communication, thought processing, problem solving, and/or memory, and return to and participation in the home or community. We recognize that psychological adjustment is an important component of recovery, and that behavior issues may be part of the person’s recovery. We are here to help. Psychological adjustment, mental health issues, behavior management and/or substance abuse be part of the whole recovery process, but are not the primary reasons for admission for our patients.

Education is an integral part of our program. The strengths and needs of the patient and the family are assessed to develop an educational and training plan. Our goal is to prepare the patient and family to be responsible for the management of healthcare needs. Individualized education, including sessions with staff, and hands on training for techniques is how this is accomplished. We emphasize prevention of recurrence of the impairment process and identification of risk factors that may have precipitated the impairment process. It is important in our program for the patient and the family to develop a skill set that will enhance success after discharge. Even after discharge, membership in support groups can help the education continue. Discharge planning begins prior to admission. We continually assess functional improvement and discharge readiness through interdisciplinary team meetings. We have developed links with community services to include community integration programs, vocational services, and transitional living and assisted living facilities. Our social worker assists in making the link to these community resources.
