Stephen R. Mason is the president and CEO of BayCare Health System, the largest, community-based health system in the Tampa Bay area with more than 20,100 employees, 10 hospitals and 200 access points. BayCare connects patients to a complete range of services through its not-for-profit hospitals, outpatient and imaging facilities, home care and other clinical services.
Mason came to BayCare in May 2004 and has more than 30 years of health care experience. He has successfully championed several major initiatives and system-wide improvements at BayCare as the organization has grown into one of the top employers in the region.
Under Mason’s leadership, BayCare created the organizational structure that will enable the system to successfully embrace the landmark health care reform law of 2010. Mason plays a key role in strategy development around the region’s health care model to reduce cost by increasing the focus on quality, wellness, early detection, and disease prevention. He also guided the adoption of BayCare’s system-wide vision to begin shifting to a population-based health model lead by physicians using evidence-based best practices. This new model will increase access to primary care in a medical home setting, improve quality, and create a more efficient, convenient, and affordable care delivery system. With Mason at the helm, BayCare also launched a seven-year project to implement an electronic medical record throughout its hospitals and clinics.
In 2011, BayCare was one of the few health systems in the nation with an upgraded credit rating, reflecting the organization’s strong and consistent financial performance. BayCare’s organizational stability and centralization of shared services in finance, information technology, and human resources strengthens each hospital’s ability to allocate resources to help meet the needs of their communities. BayCare’s hospitals and services provided $189 million in community benefits in 2012, which includes $86.2 million in traditional charity care, $91.5 million in Medicaid and other means-tested programs, and $10.9 million in unbilled community services.
Mason is chair of ONE BAY: Healthy Communities, a diverse steering group of public, private and non-profit stakeholders working to achieve positive health outcomes for Tampa Bay area residents. He served in leadership roles for the boards of the Florida Hospital Association, the Tampa Bay Partnership, the United Way of Tampa Bay, and the Florida Low Income Pool (LIP) Council. In 2005, he chaired the Tampa Bay Heart Walk, hosted by the American Heart Association.
Before BayCare, Mason was the senior executive vice president and chief operating officer of Texas Health Resources (THR), a health system in Arlington, Texas. Mason played an instrumental role in the 1997 merger that created THR and served in senior management positions with the Harris Methodist System, a founding sponsor. Mason has a master’s degree in hospital administration from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor’s in business administration from Golden Gate University in San Francisco.
