Food to Get You Through the Afternoon Slump

But before you reach for something to jolt you awake, such as a 10th cup of coffee or a candy bar from the vending machine, try something healthier.

Your snack should have a balance of nutrients – a healthy mix of protein, fiber and complex carbs – and that means fruits, whole grains, veggies, lean proteins and good fats, according to Self magazine. Here are some suggestions for healthy snacks to help you re-energize:

  • Fruit (apple or banana) with peanut butter
  • Cottage cheese with nuts and berries
  • Roasted chickpeas
  • Hummus with carrots or other veggies
  • String cheese with whole grain crackers
  • Guacamole with whole grain crackers
  • Peanut butter and jelly on whole grain bread

Another great way to beat the afternoon slump is to figure out why you’re experiencing it. You might be eating a lunch that lacks fiber and protein or has too many refined carbs (like cookies or pretzels). Dehydration and sitting for long periods of time can also cause you to feel sluggish. Try taking a walk or drinking a glass of water to help reestablish your energy level.
