Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO)

BayCare is proud to offer a variety of specialized equipment for wound care at our state-of-the-art wound care centers located throughout the Tampa Bay area. By utilizing advanced technologies such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy, we are able to help many patients manage slow-healing or non-healing wounds.

Wounds normally heal on their own over a period of several days or weeks. Oxygen plays an integral role in each stage of the healing process by supplying cells with the energy needed to regenerate, helping with the creation of new collagen, and protecting the wound against bacterial infections. In some cases, however, wounds may be slow to heal due to underlying health conditions and concentrated exposure to oxygen may be necessary.

What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) exposes the body to 100 percent oxygen. HBO may be administered as wound chamber therapy, which means a patient’s entire body is exposed to pressurized oxygen, or as a localized, topical therapy. Hyperbaric wound care may be used for:

  • Diabetic wounds
  • Delayed radiation injuries
  • Burns
  • Foot ulcers
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Surgical grafts
  • Postoperative wounds
