Muscle Ache Treatment

Muscle aches are a fairly common complaint and, in most cases, are nothing to be overly concerned about. From exercise to stress to illness, there are a variety of reasons that your muscles may start to feel achy and painful. If you do experience muscle aches, it’s important to pay close attention to what your body is telling you. Muscle aches, or myalgia, are your body’s way of indicating that something isn’t right. 

Possible causes of muscle aches include:

  • Arthritis
  • Bacterial infections
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Dehydration
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Flu
  • Nutritional deficiency
  • Overexertion
  • Sprains and strains
  • Thyroid problems

When to See a Doctor for Muscle Aches & Pains

Mild muscle pain can usually be treated with a combination of self-care treatments such as ice, elevation, compression, and rest. However, if your muscle pain persists or is accompanied by any of the following symptoms, it’s time for you to see a doctor:

  • Dizziness
  • Fever
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Muscle weakness
  • Neck stiffness
  • Rash
  • Redness or inflammation
