Winter Haven Hospital Respiratory Care FAQs

How do I know if I qualify?

Qualification for the program is based on your most recent Pulmonary Function Test. There are 2 different program types available, a 10 session program and an 18 session program. The results from your Pulmonary Function Test will help determine which program will suit you best. You must also have been diagnosed with a lung disease and be a non-smoker for at least 3 months.

How do I get into the program?

Speak with your physician and ask if you would benefit from Pulmonary Rehabilitation. Your physician would then have to send a referral to our department.

What will happen once you get my referral from my doctor?

You will receive an information packet and a questionnaire by mail. You will then be scheduled for an initial visit. During this visit, you will meet with the Medical Director and do a 6-minute Walk Test done at your own pace, stopping as needed. We will monitor your oxygen level and heart rate. You will also take a written test to see how much you know about your lung disease. These will give us an idea of what we need to teach you and where your exercise should begin. At the end of the program, we will repeat these two tests to see how much progress you have made and how much you learned.

How long is the program?

Each class is 1 ½ - 2 hours long. You will meet at a scheduled time twice weekly for approximately 5-9 weeks, depending on your qualifications.

What exercises will I do at rehab?

We will use treadmills, exercise bikes, therabands and a respiratory muscle trainer to work the diaphragm. All exercises are tailored for each patient and their abilities. You will set goals at the beginning of the program and we will work to help you meet those goals. We also work a great deal with controlling breathing to help with anxiety and shortness of breath.

Am I too sick for rehab to help me?

Our patients vary a great deal in their personal health so each person’s program is geared to their own abilities. If you are willing to come to class, participate and do your home therapies then Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a great way to learn breathing techniques and gain endurance.

Will I need to bring my own oxygen to class?

If you use oxygen, you will need to bring a tank with you to get to and from class, but during class we will provide oxygen for you.

Will my insurance pay?

Pulmonary rehabilitation is covered by Medicare and most other insurance companies, however insurance coverage varies. Authorizations will be received before beginning the program and every effort will be made to notify you before beginning the program of any co-pays or fees.

What do I do after rehab to keep myself up?

Patients will choose a variety of ways to keep up their exercises. Some opt to do exercises at home at their convenience. Others decide to join a gym and others choose go to Mary Sand Clinic where they are monitored by a nurse. There are several local programs in the community to keep up therapies.
