Weight Loss Surgery and Weight Loss Management Services

Bariatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the causes, prevention, and treatment of obesity. Dieting, exercise, weight loss behavioral therapy, drug therapy and weight loss surgery are all components of the bariatric field. Obesity is a rising medical issue that affects many Americans and causes serious health issues and diseases.

Morton Plant North Bay Hospital offers the following bariatric non-surgical treatments, education and support programs:

Bariatric/Weight Loss Consultation Patients can meet with a physician from a BayCare facility to determine if they are a candidate for weight loss surgery. If the patient is seen as a candidate for weight loss surgery, they will then meet with the bariatric coordinator in a one on one session to schedule and coordinate all of the weight loss surgery appointments ordered by the physician. Prior to meeting with a physician, patients will need to attend either an in-person weight loss information session or take the online information session.

Nutritional Counseling Requirements for clinically supervised weight loss, or pre/post-op nutritional education are satisfied through the Nutrition Centers, with physician oversight by referring surgeon. Patients are counseled in pre and postoperative weight loss surgery nutrition requirements and healthy eating recommendations by registered dietitians who are experienced in adult weight management, as well as Gastric Banding Total Care Specialists, where applicable.

Dietary education is provided by a nutritionist prior to bariatric surgery in order to provide optimal post-surgery outcomes.

Pre-operation Sleep Studies Prior to bariatric surgery, patients may be screened to determine if there are existing sleep disorders. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that may be alleviated by weight loss surgery.

Weight Loss Support Group Support groups are a valuable place for weight loss patients to meet and discuss behavioral changes and ongoing lifestyle changes - share your story and learn from others who have undergone the same transformation. Following weight loss surgery, patients are faced not only with new eating and drinking behaviors, but also difficulty in making sense of the role food plays in their lives.
