Piercing Risks Oral Health

Tongue piercing can put athletes at risk for serious medical and dental consequences, says the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). One study found that one tongue piercing in five results in infection from contaminated puncture wounds. Damage to teeth from tongue jewelry is also common, as is damage to the lungs or intestines if the jewelry is dislodged and swallowed.
