How to Use Baby Walkers

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission offers these tips for those who wish to use baby walkers safely:

  • Securely block off stairways and doorways. Nearly half of the most severe accidents occur when the baby and walker fall down the stairs.

  • Avoid uneven areas, such as raised thresholds or carpet edges that may cause walkers to tip over.

  • Clear objects off tables, countertops and stovetops that children in walkers might be able to reach.

  • Never let children in walkers near ranges, fireplaces or space heaters.

  • Watch children in walkers very carefully; they can move faster than you might expect.
