BayCare is dedicated to giving all members of our community the tools necessary to achieve the best health possible. We’ve partnered with the Florida State Department of Health to offer adults two new FREE opportunities to help reach their unique health goals. These two grant funded programs include Get Into Fitness Today (GIFT) and Diabetes Education Empowerment Program (DEEP). Classes are available in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, and we will be expanding to Polk and Pasco counties on a limited basis beginning in the summer of 2019.

Diabetes Education Empowerment Program (DEEP)

The Diabetes Education Empowerment Program (DEEP) is a free program accredited by the National American Association of Diabetes Educators and managed by trained diabetes educators. This six-week class teaches you how to manage diabetes through lifestyle changes including better nutrition and physical activity. The goal of the DEEP program is to empower you to take charge of your diabetes, avoid complications from the disease and improve self-management skills. How do I qualify?

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Have a Type 2 diagnosis of diabetes or pre-diabetes.
  • Attend one class a week for six weeks. Each class is approximately two hours long.
  • Be eager to learn and take charge of your diabetes.

Get Into Fitness Today (GIFT) Classes

Get Into Fitness Today (GIFT) is a free program offered to the community and made possible through BayCare’s partnership with the Florida State Department of Health. GIFT was developed by registered dietitians, nurses and health educators and uses science-based information to reduce chronic diseases through obesity prevention. GIFT emphasizes improving your nutrition education and increasing physical activity in your daily life, both of which help facilitate weight reduction.

GIFT classes meet once a week for 12 weeks, each class lasts about an hour. In the 12 weeks, teachers provide educational information and health tools to support your goals. The first six weeks focus on nutrition, food portioning and labels, while the second six weeks focus on maintenance, fitness and preventing health disease. After attending this program, the goal is for participants to be able to continue weight loss and wellness goals with an increased knowledge of nutrition and physical activity. 

Note: The class is more educational intensive and offers only a light portion of exercise demonstrations toward the end of the program. Casual comfortable clothes, sneakers or closed toe shoes are suggested, but not required. 

How do I qualify?

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Any individual with a BMI of 25 or higher and/or pre-hypertension (high blood pressure).
  • Attend one class a week for 12 weeks. Each class is approximately one hour long.
