Sports Medicine Elective Rotation Criteria

A two-week externship is available for senior residents (PGY-2 and PGY-3).  Applicants must be from an LCME accredited medical school or an ACGME accredited residency program.  The resident rotation application materials and supporting documentation must be submitted at least four months in advance.  The rotation is designed to expose the resident to all major components of the fellowship program.  The resident will work alongside the sports medicine fellows and attending physicians in all aspects of patient care.  Additionally, the limited availability of the rotation necessitates preference to PGY-3 residents.  Free housing within walking distance of the Morton Plant Hospital campus is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Medical student externships are available that can include some sports medicine experiences through Family Medicine.  We do not offer sports medicine only externships at this time for medical students.  For more information please contact us at (727) 467-2517 or (727) 467-2502.

Due to the limited number of rotation spots available, we recommend you receive tentative approval for one or two time periods that you prefer by your residency program before submitting your rotation request to USF-MPMPC Sports Medicine Fellowship.  We realize this can be difficult, but with the limited availability, it allows us to maximize our opportunities for interested residents.

The COVID-19 pandemic may limit our opportunities in the 2020-2021 academic year for away rotation visitors. Please inquire via the contact us page for more information.

Accepting a resident for a two week rotation does not guarantee an interview for a fellowship position.
