St. Joseph's Hospital-North Honored for Stroke Treatment

Lutz, Fla., January 29, 2021 — St. Joseph’s Hospital-North has earned an award from the Florida Stroke Registry for its ability to rapidly determine the severity and possible location of a stroke.
The Lutz hospital received the Stroke Registry’s Certificate of Achievement “for the successful achievement of Most Completeness for NIHSS.” NIHSS is an acronym for the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale and is an assessment tool and quantitative measure used in stroke care.
The award recognizes St. Joseph’s Hospital-North’s effectiveness in treating stroke.
The Stroke Registry also notified St. Joseph’s Hospital-North that it ranked as the best among 121 Florida Stroke Registry hospitals that submitted “Most Completeness” data. The Stroke Registry compared hospitals’ data from 2018 to 2019.
“Achieving the best stroke care to our patients in the community is what we strive for at St. Joseph’s North," said Dr. Katrina Cordero, emergency department medical director at St. Joseph’s Hospital-North. “Each part of the team plays an essential role in expediting the care of our patients. Our team has been dedicated to attaining the highest quality of stroke treatment, and I am so proud of our team for being recognized for all their hard work.”
The Florida Stroke Registry is managed by the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine Department of Neurology and compiles data from Florida hospitals and tracks the quality of stroke care statewide.
The Registry’s aim is to improve quality of care and health outcomes in stroke through partnerships, research, intervention and policy advocacy.
The Stroke Registry Award was St. Joseph’s Hospital-North’s second significant award in 2020 for the treatment of strokes and heart attacks. Also last year, the hospital received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® STEMI Receiving Award for meeting and exceeding specific standards of performance for quick and appropriate treatment of patients suffering heart attacks.
“The Florida Stroke Registry is an important tool in the delivery of evidence-based best practices, identification of disparities and development of future interventions to reduce disparities in acute stroke care,” said Tom Garthwaite, St. Joseph’s Hospital-North president. “The registry assists clinicians and researchers through the systematic collection and analyses of stroke-care performance metrics.”
“It is an honor for St. Joseph’s Hospital-North to be recognized for both the quality of care provided to stroke patients by the American Heart Association as well as being selected as number one of 121 hospitals in Florida for data accuracy by the Florida Stroke Registry,” Garthwaite said.
