St. Anthony’s Offers Free Screenings on 2016 Diabetes Alert Day

March 08, 2016
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (March 8, 2016) – St. Anthony’s Hospital is offering free diabetes risk assessments to mark Diabetes Alert Day from 8 a.m.-noon on Tuesday, March 22, 2016, in the main lobby of the hospital, 1200 Seventh Ave. N, St. Petersburg.

St. Anthony’s team of health professionals will help residents learn about their risk for diabetes. In addition to the risk assessments, blood glucose monitoring, blood pressure checks and body mass index screenings also will be offered. Participants are not required to fast. However, if a more accurate report of blood glucose levels is sought, fasting after midnight is advised.

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control, more than 29-million Americans suffer with diabetes – about nine percent of the U.S. population. Of those people, more than eight million do not know that they have the disease. Diabetes can put patients at greater risk for other health concerns such as heart disease and stroke, according to the National Institutes of Health.

BayCare Health System, which has teamed up with YMCA locations around the Tampa Bay area to fight the effects of diabetes in community, has started an initiative to prevent and control the occurrence of Type II diabetes. BayCare is being proactive in its fight to help residents learn how exercise and changes in diet can help combat the disease.

St. Anthony’s Hospital has been recognized by the Joint Commission as being certified in Advanced Inpatient Diabetes Care. For outpatient care, the St. Anthony’s LifeHelp Nutrition and Diabetes Center offers a variety of nutrition and lifestyle education services. Outpatient diabetes care at St. Anthony’s has been accredited by the American Diabetes Association. The certified diabetes educators who oversee St. Anthony’s inpatient and outpatient programs work with patients and the primary health care providers to help patients manage their disease.
