St. Anthony’s Hospital Foundation 2016 Legacy Dinner Features Founder of Health Centers for the Homeless

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., (Feb. 1, 2016) – Pedro Jose Greer Jr., MD, founder of the Camillus Health Concern, Saint John Bosco, health centers for the homeless, underserved and undocumented populations in Miami-Dade County, will be the guest speaker at the St. Anthony’s Hospital Foundation Legacy Awards and Dinner on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016 beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Dr. Greer, a gastroenterologist, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award given by the president of the United States, in 1999. He is the chairman of the Department of Medicine, Family Medicine and Community Health at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University. At FIU, he helped to create the Department of Humanities, Health and Society and became the founding chairman of the department in 2009.
Dr. Greer was recently honored with the 2014 National Jefferson Award in the category of Greatest Public Service Benefitting the Disadvantaged. The award was founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft, Jr., and Sam Beard. The award is often referred to as the Nobel Prize for public service. Best known as “Joe” to his patients and colleagues, Dr. Greer is the author of Waking up in America, an autobiographical account of caring for the homeless.
The Foundation’s Legacy Awards and Dinner will be held at the Hilton Carillon Park, 950 Lake Carillon Drive, St. Petersburg. Tickets for the dinner are $75. Three awards will be presented during the event:

- The Roy G. Harrell Jr. Leadership Award recognizes an individual who demonstrates vision, initiative, motivation, selflessness and commitment through outstanding community service and leadership benefiting the community.
- The Helen D. Roberts Philanthropy Award which recognizes an individual’s generosity in giving of his/her time, talent or monetary contributions to not-for-profit organizations devoted to educational, cultural, and social or public health concerns.
- The Hippocrates Award recognizes an individual physician or medical practice that demonstrates selflessness and dedication to the community.
