November 09, 2015
Hospital’s Cardiovascular Services are Recognized Among the Best in the Nation for the 14th Time

CLEARWATER, Fla., (November 9, 2015) -- Morton Plant Hospital has been selected from more than 1,000 hospitals as a 2016 Truven Health Analytics Top 50 Hospital for cardiovascular care. Identifying the nation's best providers of cardiovascular services, the annual quantitative study has recognized Morton Plant Hospital 14 times. No other hospital in the country has been named a Top Cardiovascular Hospital as many times.

“We are honored to be recognized as a Top 50 hospital for our heart care,” said Kris Hoce, president, Morton Plant Hospital. “Our cardiovascular team is very aligned and focused toward one mission – providing the best quality cardiovascular care for our patients. To accomplish that, we strive to hold ourselves accountable to highest national standards.”

Using publicly available data, the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study is conducted as an annual, objective, quantitative review of hospitals that achieved superior clinical outcomes in heart care. Hospitals named to the 50 Top Hospitals list are considered to provide outstanding care and set new standards in excellence for cardiovascular care.

“A key factor in our quality performance is the support of our senior management. They work to create a culture that fosters physicians, nurses and support staff working together as a team, constantly looking at national benchmark data and developing new strategies,” said Mahesh Amin, MD, medical director of cardiovascular services, Morton Plant Hospital.

To determine the 50 top U.S. hospitals for heart care, Truven Health researchers analyzed 2013 and 2014 Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MEDPAR) data, 2014 Medicare cost reports and 2015 Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare data. They scored hospitals in key performance areas: risk-adjusted mortality, risk-adjusted complications, core measures (a group of measures that assess process of care), percentage of coronary bypass patients with internal mammary artery use, 30-day mortality rates, 30-day readmission rates, severity-adjusted average length of stay, and wage- and severity-adjusted average cost.

Truven Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals were classified into three comparison groups – Teaching Hospitals with Cardiovascular Programs, Teaching Hospitals without Cardiovascular Programs and Community Hospitals. Morton Plant is ranked in the Teaching Hospitals without Cardiovascular programs category.
