St. Joseph's Children's Hospital is Looking for Young Heroes

St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital will kick off its 18th Annual Kids Are Heroes contest with a “Hero’s Training Camp” for nearly 100 seventh graders from Rampello Downtown Partnership School on Monday, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Amalie Arena.
During the event, kids will put their heroic skills to the test as they navigate through fun and interactive stations highlighting injury prevention and rescue skills. Thunder Bug and members from the Lightning Girls also will attend the celebration.
Before the young heroes get started, they will take a moment to honor some of the everyday heroes among us including a U.S. Marine, police officer, fire fighter, life guard and caregivers from St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. These heroes will receive a certificate and an American flag to recognize the work they do each day that inspires all of us to be heroes.
The event marks the start of the nomination period for 18th Annual Kids Are Heroes campaign, which will last until Jan. 31, 2015.
“During this time, we encourage parents, teachers and loved ones to brag a bit about the amazing kids in their lives,” said St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital President Kimberly Guy. “We want to hear about the wonderful things kids are doing to make a positive impact at home and in our community.”
Since 1996, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital’s Kids Are Heroes program has recognized more than 1,700 children between the ages 5 and 18 who have performed heroic deeds or displayed acts of selflessness and good citizenship. Some examples of past winners include children who have pulled an accident victim from a burning car, saved a sibling from a dog attack, donated their hair to make wigs for cancer patients and called 911 to help their relative suffering from a heart attack. Kids Are Heroes nomination forms can be submitted online at StJoesKidsRHeroes.org.
