Memory Clinic

Winter Haven Hospital’s two centers of excellence, the Center for Behavioral Health and the Rehabilitation Service have partnered with the University of South Florida Applied Neuroscience Lab to launch a new Memory Clinic that offers treatment for memory loss associated with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, stroke and other brain injuries. The clinic includes a wide range of treatment including psychiatry, psychosocial assessment, neuropsychology, speech / language pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, vocational rehabilitation and nursing / case management as well as family support. The Memory Clinic is based at the Center for Behavioral Health at 1201 1st Street South.

About the Memory Clinic

The Memory Clinic was developed by Iftikhar Rasul, M.D. and Takkallapelli Rao, M.D., Geriatric Psychiatrists at the Center for Behavioral Health and Dr. Jeffrey Reddout, Ph.D., Clinical Neuropsychologist at the Winter Haven Hospital Rehabilitation Center. It is staffed by an interdisciplinary team that provides outpatient evaluation, education and treatment for adults with acquired neurological difficulties that affect their physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioral well being.

Memory issues can arise from a number of causes, including illness, injuries and other disorders. The Memory Clinic may be beneficial to you, or a loved one, especially if any of the following changes have been recently noted:

  • Changes in personality, irritability, or poor self care,
  • Names of friends/relatives on the tip of the tongue, but are unable to say the name,
  • Difficulty handling money, finances, or medications, and
  • Misplacing personal belongings, keys, purse, cell phone, etc.

The Memory Clinic is designed to begin with a complete psycho-social assessment by a licensed counselor at the Center for Behavioral Health. The assessment determines the most relevant tests and screenings, such as blood work, imaging and an examination by a Neuropsychologist. After Test results are reviewed, a Geriatric Psychiatrist conducts a thorough psychiatric evaluation focused on memory. A treatment plan is created that may include cognitive therapy for brain stimulation and referrals to clinical trials.

The Memory Clinic also provides education and counseling for the patient as well as for care-givers and extended family throughout the entire evaluation and treatment processes.

Memory Clinic Psychiatrist: Dr. Iftikhar Rasul

Iftikhar Rasul, MD specializes in adult and geriatric psychiatry at the Winter Haven Hospital Center for Behavioral Health. He graduated from Allama Iqbal Medical College in Pakistan. He completed Adult Psychiatry residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, and Geriatric Psychiatry fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital, affiliated with University of Miami. Dr. Rasul provides outpatient psychiatric services and leads the Memory Clinic at the Center for Behavioral Health.

About USF Cognitive Neurophysiology Lab

The USF Cognitive Neurophysiology Lab offers a host of educational programs and research-based opportunities for individuals who are directly or indirectly affected by early stage Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Early stage programs, provided in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Association, are designed to provide education, resources, skill building, and support. Early intervention is imperative in order to ensure the healthiest journey for individuals with dementia and care partners alike. Researchers at the Applied Neuroscience Lab study many topics related to non-pharmacological interventions for early-stage Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. To do this, they need the help of people who agree to take part in research studies. Thus, opportunities to participate in research trials being conducted at the Applied Neuroscience Lab are available.
