American Diabetes Month – November 2012

November is American Diabetes Month. According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 26 million people in the United States have diabetes, about 8.5 percent of the population. In Polk County, 14% of the people living here have been diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes is a condition in which blood sugars rise to levels that are unhealthy for the entire body. People with diabetes, given the right information and help, can live healthy lives. The key to successful management is learning how to keep blood sugars at healthy ranges. Partnering with a healthcare provider to receive the proper medical help is essential.

Diabetes is a serious disease. If it isn’t managed, it can damage many parts of the body, leading to heart attacks, strokes, amputation, blindness, kidney failure, and nerve damage. But there is good news. Diabetes complications can be prevented or delayed by managing blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Learning to make healthy food choices, being physically active, checking your own blood sugar and quitting smoking also help lower the risk of diabetes complications.

Diabetes self-management education has been shown to help reduce the risk of developing diabetes related problems. Winter Haven Hospital’s Center for Diabetes Education offers individual appointments and classes for people who have diabetes and their families. To register for education, please call 863-293-1121 ext 3066 and leave a message with your name, phone number and the name of your healthcare provider. We will help you start on the road to better diabetes health. See the flier...
