Intervention and Outpatient: Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)

Program Description

TANF Adult Mental Health services are specifically for persons who meet the federal criteria for Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF). These services are targeted toward persons who are currently receiving cash assistance or are at risk for receiving cash assistance. The goal for the TANF program is to identify and provide the necessary substance abuse services to assist individuals in alleviating symptoms which are barriers that keep them from obtaining and maintaining employment, which can lead to self-sufficiency and family stability. TANF services focus on reducing the risk factors generally associated with the progression of mental health problems.

TANF programs are intended to serve two target populations:

  • Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA): Individuals/ families receiving cash payments, and
  • TANF Diversion Families (TDF): Individuals/ families who are at risk of needing TCA.
