Stephen R. Mason is president/CEO of BayCare, the leading, community-based health system in the Tampa Bay area with 22,900 employees, 11 not-for-profit hospitals and more than 280 access points. BayCare connects patients to a complete range of inpatient, outpatient, diagnostic, imaging, preventive, wellness, laboratory, behavioral health and home care services.
Mason came to BayCare in May 2004, and has more than 30 years of health care experience. Under Mason’s leadership, BayCare has created the organizational structure to successfully embrace the landmark health care reform law of 2010. He also plays a key role in strategy development around the region’s health care model to reduce cost and increase the focus on quality, wellness, early detection, and disease prevention. He guided the adoption of BayCare’s system-wide strategy to shift toward a population health model of care, and led the health system through a 7-year transition from paper records to an electronic medical record throughout its hospitals.
BayCare continues to be one of the top employers in the region with one of the highest credit ratings among health systems in the nation, thanks to the organization’s strong, consistent financial performance and experienced management team. With Mason’s leadership, BayCare recently expanded primary care services, continued developing its clinically integrated network, and acquired Winter Haven Hospital, its first hospital outside the core Tampa Bay area market. In 2013, BayCare provided $243.5 million in community benefits, which includes $110.8 million in traditional charity care, $121.4 million in Medicaid and other means-tested programs, and $11.3 million in unbilled community services.
Mason has played a key role in ONE BAY: Healthy Communities, a steering group of public, private and non-profit stakeholders working to achieve positive health outcomes for the Tampa Bay area. He has served in leadership roles for the boards of the Florida Hospital Association, the Tampa Bay Partnership, the United Way of Tampa Bay, and the Florida Low Income Pool (LIP) Council. In 2005, he chaired the Tampa Bay Heart Walk, hosted by the American Heart Association.
Before coming to BayCare, Mason was the senior executive vice president and chief operating officer of Texas Health Resources (THR), a health system in Arlington, Texas. Mason played an instrumental role in the 1997 merger that created THR and served in senior management positions with the Harris Methodist System, a founding sponsor. Mason has a master’s degree in hospital administration from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor’s in business administration from Golden Gate University in San Francisco.
Mr. Mason is a dedicated family man and lives in South Tampa with his wife, Wanda. He enjoys visiting his daughter, Amanda, a graduate student studying Opera at the Manhattan School of Music in New York.
