Occupational Therapy

The primary role of occupational therapy here at Alliant Hospital is help our patients achieve and maintain the highest levels of independence possible to carry out their activities of daily living (ADL) and to engage in purposeful activity, including:

  • Neurological Rehab: Help to regain use of the upper extremity/hand, vision training, positioning for edema control and contracture management, orthotics and more
  • Energy Conservation and Work Simplification: Teaching of techniques to expend less energy and prioritize tasks by energy required. This is essential training for any cardiac or pulmonary condition.
  • Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Retraining: Perform self-care tasks as independently as possible after illness or injury. ADLs include feeding, bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care, toileting, cooking/meal preparation, transfer to bedside commode/toilet, wheelchair mobility, standing sink-side and tub/shower transfers
  • Joint Protection/Back Safety: Techniques essential for patient’s with arthritis and/or following an orthopedic surgery
  • Coordination: Gross motor and fine motor coordination exercises and activities
  • Adaptive Equipment Recommendation and Training: Equipment to assist a patient not able to complete ADLs independently
  • Cognitive Therapy: Memory aids and techniques for patients and caregivers related to ADL performance
  • Strengthening: For improving activity tolerance and overall endurance needed to complete their daily routines
  • Orthotics: Orthotic fabrication, fitting, adjusting and scheduling for the neurological and/or orthopedic patients
  • Edema Management: Use of compression techniques and/or devices, massage, positioning to manage swelling
