What Is A Disc Repair?

This surgery is used to repair and adjust damaged spinal discs.

Why Is It Done?

You may require this procedure under the following conditions:

  • You have a herniated disc that is not responding to conservative treatment.
  • A disc fragment has lodged in your spinal canal.
  • You have difficulty standing or walking.
  • You are in constant pain.

How to Prepare

Prior to the surgery, you will meet with your doctor to discuss any concerns you have. Be sure to tell your doctor about any medications you are taking, since you may need to stop taking them temporarily. You probably will be asked not to eat or drink anything for several hours before the surgery. Your medical team will provide specific instructions.

What to Expect

In most cases, you will be under general anesthesia, so you will not be conscious. Your surgeon will make an incision on your spine, over the problematic disc. Your back muscles will be moved out of the way, so your surgeon can reach the disc. He or she will remove any broken parts of the disc or any parts that are protruding. Then the surgeon will close the incision with stitches. Learn more about BayCare's Spine Care Centers.

You may be released from the hospital on the same day as your surgery, or you may need to stay overnight. Following the procedure, you will likely need two to six weeks to recover.
