Breast Care Services
BayCare offers imaging services that can screen, diagnose, and help treat breast issues you may have. However, services at each imaging and breast center may vary.
Screening
- Mammography: This low-dose X-ray will take various pictures of your breast to detect any masses, tumors, or other areas of concern. Computer-aided detection (CAD) uses a digitized image to check for abnormalities.
- Breast MRI: Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), this test is often used if your doctor needs more information after a mammogram.
- Ultrasound: If your doctor sees something suspicious on a mammogram, the next step may be ultrasound. This test uses high-frequency sound waves to take further images of your breasts.
Diagnostic
- Stereotactic Biopsy: If a mass or other area of concern is detected, your doctor may suggest a biopsy. For a stereotactic biopsy, a mammogram machine is used to help guide a radiologist to take a sample of your breast tissue. This is a minimally invasive procedure.
- Ultrasound Guided Biopsy: Also a minimally invasive procedure, this type of biopsy uses an ultrasound machine to help guide the radiologist to take a sample of the breast tissue.
- Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy: A radiologist uses a narrow needle and a syringe to take a sample of the suspicious mass.
- Needle Localization: In this procedure, a needle is inserted into your breast and a wire is positioned at the area of concern. This wire guides a surgeon during a breast biopsy.
Surgical
- Breast Biopsy: This is a surgical procedure in which the suspicious breast tissue is removed for testing.
- Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy: During this procedure, a surgeon removes the sentinel nodes (those closest to the tumor or mass) so your team can decide if additional surgery is needed.
- Lumpectomy: During this procedure, a surgeon removes a breast tumor and the tissue surrounding it.
- Mastectomy: This operation involves the surgical removal of your breast.
- Reconstructive Surgery: This can involve breast augmentation, reduction, or lift procedures for reconstruction after breast cancer surgery.
Additional Services In addition to breast care, these women's services are offered at select locations.
- Lymph Drainage and Compression Therapy: After breast surgery, some women can experience lymphedema, which is caused by damaged lymph nodes or accumulation of fluid. We offer drainage and compression therapy to treat this condition.
- Bone Densitometry: This procedure measures your bone density and helps diagnose osteoporosis. It is a noninvasive X-ray, usually focused on the spine and hips.
