Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Program Description

Specialized services for Dialectical Behavior Therapy are offered as part of the Childrens Mental Health Program. All adolescents/families referred will complete a request for services application. The primary therapist will then conduct a specialized in-depth assessment to evaluate if the adolescent meets admission criteria. If the adolescent meets admission criteria they will be treated based on identified needs and strengths. The Adolescent DBT Program consists of four primary components involving individual therapy, group skills training, telephone contact and therapist consultation.

Examples Of Targets For Individual Therapy:

  • Decreasing suicidal behavior
  • Decreasing therapy interfering behaviors
  • Decreasing behaviors that interfere with the quality of life and home environment
  • Increasing behavioral skills
  • Decreasing behaviors related to stress
  • Improving self-esteem

The goal of skills training is to change behavioral, emotional and thinking patterns that cause personal misery and interpersonal distress. Skill training is offered in a group context where adolescents and their parents/guardians are taught skills considered relevant to the particular problems experienced by suicidal youth. The four skills training curriculum modules focus on; identity confusion (core mindfulness skills), unstable relationships (interpersonal effectiveness skills), mood lability (emotional modulation skills), and impulsivity (distress tolerance skills). Between sessions the adolescent and his/her family is offered telephone contact with his/her therapist, including non-traditional hours (evenings and weekends). The intent is to give the family help and support in applying the skills that their child has learned to their real life situation between sessions and to help find ways of avoiding self-injury.
