Dialectical Behavior Therapy
(DBT)
Program Description
DBT services offer an enhanced strategy as part of an
evidenced-based, empirically-researched psychotherapeutic treatment model
designed by Dr. Marsha Linehan, Professor of Psychology, University of
Washington. The model is designed for individuals struggling with chronic
suicidality, intentional self-harm and borderline personality disorder (BPD).
This therapeutic approach employs both cognitive and behavioral principles.
Beyond the basic principles, DBT has structural requirements
that further define it. DBT consists of four primary
components: individual therapy, group skills training, telephone contact
and therapist consultation. DBT is a comprehensive cognitive-behavioral
treatment model for complex, difficult-to-treat individuals with mental
disorders. This modality of treatment is based on a combined capability deficit
and motivational model for BPD.
The model infers that
- Individuals with BPD lack important interpersonal,
self-regulation (including emotional regulation) and distress tolerances,
and
- Personal and environmental factors often block and/or inhibit
the use of behavioral skills that individuals with BPD do have and thus
reinforce dysfunctional behaviors.
