Value-Added Services

EAPs were introduced into the work place in the 40s with a primary goal of providing help to those suffering from alcoholism. As EAPs evolved, the programs took a "broad brush" approach to problems affecting job performance. As a result, the range of services widened to include help for personal problems, such as martial and family issues, stress, emotional concerns, substance abuse, and even legal and financial situations.

As the 21st century approached, the complexities facing the workforce increased. The "sandwich generation" emerged, faced with the challenges of working full-time while caring for not only their children, but also their elderly parents. Many households had two working parents, as demands on the attention to their family matters increased. In order to meet the ever-increasing challenges facing employees balancing their work and personal lives, "work-life" programs became a compliment to EAPs.

Referrals to community support groups and information on a variety of resources became an integral part of employee assistance. Areas of concern also included eldercare, childcare, mediation, wellness programs, health information, parenting skills, financial management, and much more. EAPs became comprehensive programs geared toward helping employees balance their work and personal life.
