Local Synagogue Donates Handmade Blankets to St. Anthony's

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (March 9, 2004) - Members of the Congregation B'nai Israel in St. Petersburg will donate 80 handmade lap blankets to St. Anthony's, as part of an organized day of caring called Mitzvah Day Across the Bay.

Members of the synagogue will deliver the blankets, made of fleece fabric, to the hospital on Wednesday at 4 p.m. St. Anthony's will distribute the blankets to patients in palliative care and patients at the hospital who may not have loved ones to visit them.

"Anything that can lend a sense of comfort, connectivity and compassion can help the healing process," said Karen Reich, St. Anthony's director of ambulatory care. "When people feel connected to other people, that can be a form of healing."

The Congregation B'Nai Israel organized the day of good deeds around Pinellas County three years ago. This year, six synagogues from the Tampa Bay area also took part in the effort, which was Sunday, Feb. 29. Organizers estimated about 1,300 volunteers helped over 40 agencies and participated in volunteer efforts such as doing crafts with retarded adults, helping elderly people shop and taking part in area cleanups.

About 16 members of Congregation B'Nai Israel spent Sunday making lap blankets with materials donated from individuals and businesses. Those blankets will be delivered Wednesday at the hospital's main lobby off Seventh Avenue N.

The hospital's palliative care consists of a team of doctors, nursing specialists, social workers and clergy who work with the patient, family and the patient's physician throughout the course of the illness. St. Anthony's palliative care is offered in conjunction with The Hospice of the Florida Suncoast as a consult service.
